Project Description:

360° is a one day summit for engagement professionals, community and decision makers in the Bay of Plenty. Like the whakatauki (proverb), we aim to inspire attendees to aim high and share tools to deliver great engagement. Coordinated by BOP Community Engagers Network, 360° would grow professional support, and strengthen our own capacity and capability within our region. The day will include keynote speakers, open space, panel sessions, mentoring opportunities, online and static displays.

Advocating for Engagement:

Our guiding whakatauki literally means “Seek the treasure you value most dearly: if you bow your head, let it be to a lofty mountain”. In practice it is aiming for what is truly valuable, and not letting obstacles stop you reaching your goal. We want 360° attendees to be inspired to strive for best practice. 360° will advocate for a holistic approach to engagement. We want to bring together all the actors in the process- decision makers, practitioners and ‘less often heard’ stakeholders to build their understanding and recognition of how engagement can add value to a project. Our wider network will determine the final programme which may include:

  • Tangata Whenua panel on their various roles in engagement
  • Accredited presenters to share the latest IAP2 resources, and research
  • Sharing our adapted Engagement Spectrum which outlines the requirements for engaging Māori
  • Legislative requirements as to why engagement is a MUST in Aotearoa
  • Incorporating online tools into 360°

Strengthening Engagement Networks:

360° would help to professionalise the Bay of Plenty Engagers Network. This application builds on an existing network of over sixty working in community engagement. We meet regularly to share case studies, new tools, challenges and training opportunities including at least four ‘in-house’ IAP2 trainings in recent years where hosts have opened the doors to partner organisations. We already have youth on our Project Team and would actively recruit young leaders in our communities as participants, provide opportunities for youth to be in presenting roles and/or on panels, and offer a pre-summit breakfast for our youth delegates and potential mentors in the industry. 360° would provide an opportunity to for our informal network to contribute to the practice with a wider audience, and offer a broader context for local successes and learning by inviting Australasian and potentially international participants. Online videos of key presentations will be made available to attendees and IAP2.

Advocating Professional Development:

Events like 360° can help build the profile of professional pathways and training available from IAP2. This is a capability growing opportunity in our own region whereas most often training requires a large budget to cover course costs, flights and accommodation. We hope by demonstrating the value of good engagement to all the actors through this summit, practitioners will hold themselves to high professional standards, community leaders will expect to see it in action and decision makers will prioritise resources to deliver. Through this collaborative network we strengthen relationships between our organisations, but also help build common language, understanding and practices so we can collaborate on shared projects and provide a common level of service to our communities. By inviting the University of Waikato to partner in this summit we hope it opens dialogue about how engagement skills can be recognised in a tertiary setting.
